Hey, I’m Thom — a mountain-raised sailor, fisherman, diver and beach lover who’s always chasing that perfect mix of salt air and good music.
Raised in the mountains, I grew up with wide-open skies and a restless spirit that eventually led me to the coast when my best friend in the sixth grade invited me to go to Myrtle Beach with his family. I’ll never forget the first time I ever saw the ocean….It was burned into my mind’s eye and I still love the feeling I get every time I recall hearing his mom say, “Wake up boys, we’re at the beach!” I don’t think I even went into the motel (yeah, it was a long time ago); I just ran to the ocean…. I loved it and I was beach-bitten.
After several years of romping around US and international beaches, I finally moved to Savannah, GA where we lived on the tidal waters and I literally fished/crabbed/biked/etc… every day. We loved it! Of course, “life” happened and I had to make a tough choice to move back to the mountains but not so far away that I can’t make a beach run when needed.
Now I spend my days on the water as a sailor, kayaker, diver and fisherman, living the laid-back lifestyle I always craved. When I’m not out on the boat or biking, you’ll find me playing music or soaking up the sun with a guitar in hand.
I’m still working a full-time gig in the software industry but it’s worth it to be able to live/travel anywhere and still support my family.
I created Trop Rock Talk as a podcast and blog to celebrate the music and lifestyle I love. Trop Rock (that feel-good blend of rock, island vibes, and coastal soul) perfectly captures the freedom, fun, and relaxation I live every day. Through the show and blog, I share great music, talk with artists, tell stories from the water and the road, and connect with others who live for the beach, the boat, and that unmistakable Trop Rock groove.
If you love Jimmy Buffett-style vibes, island rock, sailing stories, fishing tales, and a laid-back coastal attitude, you’re right at home here.
Welcome aboard. Let’s talk Trop Rock.
